Most popular sites users are spending their time at in 2022

The most visited websites in the world are an ever-changing list of new websites, and new trends appear all the time. Today, we’ll take a look and see what websites make up the top 10 and how many website views you’d have to notch up to find yourself on the list. Now, maybe quite surprisingly, not one gambling website appears in the top 50.

Whether this is due to people preferring mobile apps over the website itself might be a consideration we should consider. TikTok is currently the most popular app in the world but barely scrapes into the top 20 on the most popular websites. Maybe the fact that gambling companies tend to operate similarly and put emphasis on their mobile apps is a factor. However, sports betting odds can be found online and provide flexibility for people who prefer not to use mobile apps all the time.

Google

That’s right, and Google is king when it comes to the most popular sites in the world of any type. Amassing an astonishing 79.5 billion views per month, it is by far and away the most visited website on the internet. The world-renowned search engine was the creation of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It is widely considered one of the big five tech companies in America, alongside Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Apple.

First launched in 1998, Google has defined an internet generation and is the go-to search engine for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Their grip on the market is substantial, and it isn’t easy to see another search engine coming along and taking such a prominent role in the field. Microsoft has attempted to muscle in on this industry by launching Bing in 2009, but Google still dominates over 75% of all online searches.

Due to their dominance, Google has established key advertising revenues and uses this to fuel its technology and advancement. There may be some potential pushback in the future, but it’s hard to see a digital world where Google doesn’t feature heavily.

YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

The companies that make up the rest of the top five are all social media companies. Half of them are owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta and are among the big four social media companies that operate on the internet. This illustrates that the younger generation is the driving force behind the most popular websites on the internet at the moment.

Facebook was first developed in 2004, and Instagram was acquired by Facebook and brought under its umbrella in 2012. Today, Instagram makes billions of dollars of profit for Meta and has over 4 billion website hits per month. Considering Instagram is focused on its mobile app, the figures for the website are very impressive.

Facebook is even more impressive. With an estimated 1 in 3 people on the planet having a Facebook account, it is no surprise that they also feature in the top five.

Twitter is different from Facebook and Instagram as Meta does not own it. Recently, there were talks of a bid from the world’s richest man Elon Musk to purchase the company, but these talks have since fallen through. In any event, the potential for Twitter is huge, and with over 6 billion views per month, it is an absolute giant on the internet and in modern popular culture.

YouTube is second on the popularity list, with 66 billion views per month. The Google-owned company is a mammoth organization with a seemingly infinite stream of media flowing through it. There’s something for everyone on YouTube, and with the might of Google financing and overseeing their operations, both Google and YouTube are the biggest and most popular websites in the world today.

We could have broken down the top 50 list for you today, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Other massive companies in the top 10 include companies such as Wikipedia, Amazon and Reddit. With the world gearing further towards mobile apps and their development over websites, these companies may have the traffic from their websites fall as more users are directed towards their mobile apps.

With the rise of TikTok, we have seen that these websites can develop from the corners of the internet and rise incredibly quickly to become huge players in their respective fields. This list may have a few new names on it this time next year. Who knows?
